I really want to go home for her surgery. I would love to fly. Mostly because I could spend more time with family rather than on the road traveling. I can only take about a week off of work. Her hospital stay is expected to be at least 5 days. My Aunt who lives near me says she would love to go for moral support. Naturally she wants to drive so that she'll have her car with her while there. It would be much cheaper to travel with her and share the cost of gas but it would steel time from my visit... I'm talking about 2 days getting there and 2 days back if I drive with her. What do you think I should do?

i think you should foot the bill and fly. go see her the day of the surgery and stay with her 2 days after and head home. as long as she doesnt have any complications, that should be sufficient, then you can check up on her by phone. but you may waste valuable time driving, so i would fly in your situation. There are times that you just need to go on ahead and spend the money and these are one of those times.

Sweetie,I think if u only got a week and it is going to take u 4 days for the trip by car then u need to fly.I know cheaper and all that I understand. But this is a big thing and u need to spend as much time as possible with your mom. That's the most important thing.Cause with a 4 day travel and a week off the best u would really have with her would be about 2 days including the weekend and when u left each place.fly it cost more but U have more important thing than money tho think about at the moment.U would get to spend 6 days even with her and have a day home before going back to work if u fly other than trying to cram all your time in to 2 days and have to go back to work totally beat and emotional from it all as well.

i think you should tell your boss that your mom has lung cancer and she really wants you there for moral support and you need a little longer off than just 5 days maybe like 7 days.. Say you will work an hour later or come and hour yearly or somethink like that. Just say that this is really important to you and and your mom is getting surgery for Christ's sake and that you need 7 days and that is that. Well maybe not that harsh because then you might get fired..lol hope i helped.. o i think it would be cheaper to go with you Auntie and maybe if you dry fast or dont stop as much and wait till like late at night to stop for a hotel that it might take you a day and a half. so i would go with the driving.flying cost a lot. PEACE!! hope your mom gets better! I wish her luck with her Surgery

I think you ought to drive with your aunt. It's hard to spend the extra time away from your mother but your aunt will need support as well. I'm assuming that it's your mother's sister and it would be a very long lonely drive for her if you don't travel with her. Ask at work if you can have extra time. It should be allowed under FMLA if you've had the job a while.

Does your job have FMLA (Family Medical Leave of Absence)? If so take advantage of it and drive with your aunt, or fly whatever you choose. You can take a little over a week or so if you prove your mom really needs you, and obviously she does. This program does not offer wages though, you may use whatever vacation hours you have for this as well, after that you don't get paid, but this guarantees your job will still be waiting for you.

I think the most important person now is your mom. And of course, not only you want to be with her, but YOU NEED IT! so forget about your aunt and fly to your mom's side. At least that's what I would do in a heart beat. And I truly hope your mom gets better.

Fly, your aunt can rent a car or drive by herself, unless you desperately need the money, but either choice, it's not a moral decision, it's simply what you can afford to do.

I would say fly. You already dread 4 days driving. You will dread it even more after one day on the road.

Sorry about your mother. Since her cancer is operable, then I trust she will be okay. Good luck to you both.

At least you are going to be with your mother, maybe just seeing you she will be better, do not think more, just go, and stay there the time you can, and give your mother the best of you. Maybe later will be too late.
