The formula is: 10.5 dog years per human year for the first 2 years, then 4 dog years per human year for each year after.

Cat years compared to human years, (from material provided by the Gaines Research Center), cats will age 15 years in the first year (10 years in the first six months!) and 4 years for every year thereafter. Some veterinarians say 20 years for the first year, 4 years for each year thereafter.

According to popular belief, a dog/cat ages 7 years for every human year but I have heard that the growing years of an animal are much more, it's only after they reach maturity/adulthood that its 7 years. Also different breeds have different lifespans, so if I were you, I'd not count on the 7 year to 1 being very accurate. Research. Dog? Cat? Breed? Age in Human Years? Then calculate.

The first year of a dog's or cat's year is equal to 7 year's in a humans age. After that it begins to change, but I don't remember for sure what it is. I think around 4 years to 1, but I am sure of the first year.
