This is actually a funny subject. I approach it with humor anyways. I simply ask people not to take the Gay word in vane. This situation usually comes up in our house when our children have friends over.

You see we are a modern lesbian run household. We have three children 9, 10 and 17. They are very active socially and have guests over often. So someone who is visiting will say.. "hahaha ... oh that is sooo GAAAAY..."

And I will say... oh come on now, don't you go taking that gay word in vane. and they will always realize what exactly it is that they are saying. The fact is it is NOT appropriate. It wouldn't be appropriate in a business setting and we can only gently help them along the way.

Kids always say they feel very comfortable here and that they like that they can talk to us (my wife is a nurse that helps). And how our home really isn't different from other peoples homes.

Do I actually take things personally? I have a choice to take things personally or not. And I choose not to. I choose to make a difference in my gay world.

I wouldn't know what was meant by that statement, but I do take offense when somebody ignores all the knowledge accumulated over the past fifty years and infers I make a choice to be myself. I know it makes you feel good because it infers you're straight by choice and thus some how better than others.

I dont guess that I get too offended. I just kind of look at them and be like "DUDE!" I may, at times, remind them of who is presently in their company, causing them to rephrase or retract their last statement. Some people just don't think about it. Its part of alot of people's every day conversation. But just a question.... when a person says "That was bitchin", do you get offended because:
A. your a biotch (it won't let me type *********.)
B. your current attitude is negative
C. your having a bad day
D. you take no offense

Kind of the same thing if you think about it.

It depends on the individual. I personally find it offensive, and I make sure my friends know it; whether they're straight or gay or bi or anything else. It's offensive because the etymology of the word used as it is WAS directly derived from "gay" meaning same-gender-loving. I don't like my gay friends using "f-g" or "f----t" either, because their historical etymology refers to the burning of queer people.

No, it's a completely different meaning of the word, so I'm not offended. They aren't implying that the thing is homosexual, just that it's not "in". Kind of like saying that something is "stupid" or "fresh" (meaning good). In slang terms, "cool" & "hot" are synonymous.

Yes. People need to stop using that term as a negative. Would you think its ok to say in a room full of black people, that something bad is "so black"? No. (or any other example) Its the same thing.

No, not really, my Dear. Gay to me can mean not only homosexual, but also Happy. I do like being Happy. It's a good thing for me. Blessings. Oh...pay no mind to those other idiots. They are what they are.

I'm straight, and I don't like that remark. It's sounds like a slam against people who are. And I heard it from someone who I found out later was BI. LOL. I guess people do evolve.

I wouldn't. Co-opting the term gay to use it as a derogatory is just an expression of their ignorance and emotional immaturity.

Yes I do, People who use that comment usually use it to indicate that something is bad. I do not think being gay should be equated with somethuing being bad.
