escorts are illegal if they are having sex for money, then they are doing prositution also.
escort is merely a date for pay with no sex ( not that it happens like that very often)

Escorts services serve the rich. Prostitutes serve anyone as long as they can pay the cheap prices.
Look at all the country clubs in "dry counties", rich can go there, join and drink every night. The poor may have to drive a 2 hour trip to get a single case of beer and drive home---they can not buy more than the limit. If they buy more than the limit they are charged an outrageous fine like $500 per 6 pack over the limit.
Some states have very few counties considered "wet".

Many escort services are registered businesses. Their main business is to provide company for the person requesting it. Of course, a lot of them have sex on the side.
Call-girls services are illegal but many of them masquerade under the escort services umbrella.
Prostitution is illegal because it is not registered and Uncle Sam isn't making any money of it.

Escorts don't technically have sex with you, they just go out with you. But they are really the same thing and it's just a way to give rich guys their "sugar."

An escort is hired to 'escort' you to a function or whatever.
A prostitute, or gigolo is hired for sex.
Big difference!
You need an escort to meet social standards at times.
I have never had the need to hire anyone for sex :-)
