Was a merry old soul...and a merry old soul was he. He called for his pipe and he called for his bowl...and he called for his fiddlers three....

What was it, do you suppose, that made him so freakin' merry?

Smokin' de pipe, while eating soup, and watchin' dem fiddlers three...Sounds merry to me...

Every fiddler had a fine fiddle, and a very fine fiddle had he;
Oh there's none so rare as can compare

Either the contents of the pipe. (Not told in the rhyme.) Or the bowl. (Also not told.)

The fiddlers were just there to entertain him while he was drunk or high. Or as the rhyme suggests - he was both.
