Looking at them: around six or seven months, if you are holding it.
Really focusing on them: between 12 and 14 months, from what i have noticed.
(i work at a daycare with kids that age!)

I have 3 daughters. All of them loved books at a very young age. I'd say that they enjoyed looking at them on my lap before they could hold them on their own. And as soon as they could sit they were happy to have a book in front of them. I think it's wonderful that you are inquiring about this subject! If you start them off young they will learn to love books and reading. I was a child that didn't have many books and I sure didn't have a desire to read. I also had trouble with reading in school because I thought of it as work instead of enjoyment. My daughters are complete opposites of me and I'm certain it's because I read to them often and gave them access. Good luck and God bless!

I think that my daughter really liked the big books with the bright colors before anything else. I am sure that it was when she could sit up and her fav thing to look at was other babies in books.

I sat with a book in front of my daughter right away. It is never too early. I do recommend board books with lots of pictures for little hands though. It gets frustrating when they are a little older baby and tear pages out of nice story books.

Babies love books from the beginning! Such bright colors and all those paper noises! Also, children love to be read to. They love the sound of a voice. I used to read my own books out loud to my son when he was a newborn and he always calmed down. A love of reading, learned early, will put that child on the fast track of learning and knowledge for the rest of his/her life!

I read to my baby from the time she was in the womb. When she was born and I was over my PPD I started reading to her again and she loved it. Even though she couldnt hold the book or sit up, all the colors would entertain her alot.

My son is 6 months old and he has been looking at books sice around 3 months. I started reading to him early on and he loves hearing my voice. Try it, your baby will enjoy the one on one time with you.

When they can hold a book.
They like those plastic squishy books with black/red/white colors on the pages. They also like pictures of faces, especially Mom & Dad's faces, along with bro's & sis's if any. Animal pix, too. You can make the books yourself by photocopying close ups and laminating them, or covering with contact paper.

You should elaborate...Do you mean looking at books and slobbing on them, ripping the pages out? Or looking at them and pretend they're reading it? My baby started pretending she was reading when she was 2...but its never too early to introduce books to your baby...Never too early!
