It was actually taken from mother nature's play book. They took this from raptors, (no not dinosaurs) birds of prey. Falcons especially. All species of falcons have a black marking under their eyes. Making it easier to locate prey. Athletes discovered that it made it easier to see looking into a light source to find the ball. The whole intimidation thing was just a by product.

Football players put the black paint under their eyes to reduce glare from the sun. People with sensitive eyes(like me) find this useful. A lot of quarterbacks use this because the glare might hurt their aim.

It's suppose to cut the glare when they are playing. It's nothing new. If you ever seen any of the Egyption painting etc. you would see how they also did the same thing. In their case it also was a form of sun protection. As it has been said, there is nothing new under the sun and I guess this proves it.

So eliminate the glare of the sun from bouncing off their faces and into their eyes. Better visibility.

It's for anti glare. You wear them so the lights dont distract you off of helmets. You can also use them for intimidation. I wear them every Friday night.
