The only way you could tone your muscles during a massage would be to flex and hold your muscles in a state of being flexed. However, that defeats the purpose of a massage, which is to loosen your muscles. It would be better to work out and have a regular massage to mitigate the effects of sore muscles. Using essential oils and aromatherapy with massage is very beneficial, relaxing, and rejuvenating. If you were TOTALLY sedentary...like maybe an invalid...a deep tissue massage could provide some measure of exercise benefit...but only a little. The muscles are after all stimulated and moved around, and for a very sedentary person, there might even be a little aerobic benefit. But as everyone else has said here, don't count on massage over a real work out. For the vast majority of us, massage has many benefits, but that doesn't rank up among the major ones.

I've been working out for years I can't imagine a massage toning muscles . muscles have to contract and release to get tone , I've had massages after a work out to relax the muscles after wards and so they don't cramp, there's absolutely no way they can become tone

No tone muscles requires flexing. Massage is the opposite.

Massage therapists claim many things.

I don't think that replacing a workout at the YMCA is one of them.

Massages are used by most high-end athletes, but they use them to loosen muscles, promote circulation and heal injuries.

Yes it is a good workout and can tone and build muscle. The thing is you have to be the masseuse not the massagee.

Depends, if it has a "Happy ending" it could end up being quite a work out.
