probably a little bit of both. Depending on the mistake and the results.
For example let's say - someone got into drugs and wound up dying from an overdose. I'm not so sure I'd want to learn that one for myslef.
On the other hand, if someone ate lots of chocoalte chip cookies and wound up gaining 20lbs, then I think I'd like to learn that lesson the hard way.
At least I would have the memory anyway. Something to keep me company in my old age.

It all depends on what the mistake is. If it's something that has fatal results, it's best to learn that somebody else already tried it and things did not go well.

I don''t think anyone ever learned anything from other peoples mistakes, hell plenty of them don't even learn from their own.

Both.

Learn from others' mistakes becasue:
"Learn from the mistakes of others. We won't live long enough to make them all ourselves." - Anonymous

Learn from our own mistakes because:
"If someone cheats you once, it's his fault. If he cheats you twice, it's your fault." - Anonymous
