The hard drive will operate at the speed of the older USB port. All USB 2.0 devices are backwards compatible with their 1.0 ancestors.

It should just work slower - there can always be exceptions, but USB2 is generally considered backward compatible and it should work just fine, just much slower.
Strongly recommend you get a USB 2.0 PC CARD or PCI card for your system (PC CARD for laptop, PCI for desktop).

Yes it will work.
I have an 80gb external USB2.0 hdd caddy plugged into the USB1.1 port on my laptop. Works fine, just slow.

It will work if you have windows 98se or later version...It will be some slower but will be fine

yes but but how old, and yes but often you 2.0 device will slow or default to the slower device. you could always flash your bios ???????????????????????
