Does anyone know why the decommissioned and sank the USS Belleau Wood?

I was on the USS Belleau Wood LHA-3 back in 2001. I recently found out that it was decommissioned sometime last year and was sunk off the coast of Hawaii this year in July. WHY???

I know the ship was pretty old but it was sent to the docks in 2003.

It happens,one of the ships I was on,USS Patterson,DE1061,
was scrapped,the other,USS Guadalcanal LPH7,is now a floating museum.
How old was the USS Belleau Wood?Age has alot to do with it.
