I have received an invitation to a computer museum's awards ceremony happening in a few weeks and have never heard of black-tie optional. Does it mean that I need to wear both a suit and tie? Or just show up for the event wearing a suit?

Black-tie optional means that you have the option to go full formal and wear a tuxedo or choose to wear more of a cocktail attire instead: a nice dark suit and a regular tie.
I wouldn't recommend wearing a regular suit that you would normally wear to work, though. Dark blends work best with a crisp white shirt and colorful silk or satin tie. You could even dress it up by placing a matching hankerchief in your coat pocket.
If you're bringing a female companion along, her choice would be either to wear a full-length ball gown (black tie) or a nice cocktail dress, which is usually shorter in length and not as fancy. This is where the term "little black dress" might come in handy. The couple should at least dress at the same "level", however. Either you both go black tie or not.

a black tie is not an absolute necessity -- specially if your name is Marlon Brando --but in your case i would strongly suggest you put a black tie in your pocket -- and see how the mood and the look is once you get there..if all or most have black ties then go to the w.c. and wear one. it solves the issue. yes, a suit you should wear and no need to bring your pajamas along.

Social Butterfly is absolutely correct...and FYI "black tie" refers to the black tie one would wear with a Tuxedo, it does not mean you need to wear a "black" tie with a suit: Black Tie Optional means "Tuxedo" optional, but still requires a suit.

I think that it would mean that you either wear a black tie (if you have one and want to) most people may- or any other other color you want to! If I got such an invitation I probably would pick another color-just to be different-but that is just me! I am a woman what do I know?

It means you can dress semi-formal or go all out with a suit, and tie.

I think that means a suit is optional, but you should probably wear something nicer than sweat pants.
