There are many "myths" and "Old Wive's Tales" about this subject, but in actuality, it is the male who determines the sex of the child, according to which particular spermazoa makes entry into the egg for fertilization. Positions nor potions will determine this; it is the "luck of the draw" so to speak as to which sperm, male genetic code for gender, or female genetic code, will determine it.

Males produce the X or the Y chromasome that matches up with their partners X chromasome. It's there from the moment of fertilisation, and it only triggers certain growths (or not in the case of defective genetics). There are also hormonal changes which can go 'wrong' and you can end up with an intersexed child based on either of those things, defective genetics, or incorrect hormonal amounts/releases, at the proper time.
The child is considered 'female' until approximately the 8 week stage. Where the 'Y' chromasome, if present, will start to come into effect and trigger changes to produce masculine based physical responses in the tissues, and male secondary sexual characteristics begin to develop and such. If it's not present then you are likely to have a girl develop instead.
The birth sex of the child is beyond your control, but not beyond the role of science whereby as mentioned elsewhere in this subject, so artificial means of selection can be bought about.
Altering hormonal balances are just asking for trouble mostly. So it's best not to do a home version of what science offers, as it takes more than just hormones to affect the childs growth and development in the womb, and there's a chance you might end up with someone who is intersexed instead of adhering to the gender binaries.
In a perfect world all births would just be accepted, no matter what the gender of the child.
And unlike someone else states here there are two sets (sometimes more, as in the example below) of sex chromasomes in all creatures if they have two parents.
Quoted from wikipedia in relation to the Platypus: 'In 2004, researchers at the Australian National University discovered the platypus has ten sex chromosomes, compared to two (XY) found in most other mammals (for instance, a male platypus is always XYXYXYXYXY). Furthermore, one of the platypus’s Y chromosomes shares genes with the ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes found in birds. This news has further pronounced the individuality of the platypus amongst the animal kingdom, and a target for further research into evolutionary links between mammals, birds and reptiles.'

Everything you hear will be "old wive's tales" The truth is all babies are female until the proper Chromosome is added at the correct time. Other species do not need this chromosome. There are also tales that if the woman is holding the baby in the front it will be a boy/girl or if the baby is riding low in the stomach.. blah blah blah... get a sonogram...

The truth is the male determines the sex of the baby. XX chromosomes and XY. Science can seperate the boys from the girls and inseminate you with the boys or the girls! FACT!

There's the "Shettle's Method". According to that theory, your position can help determine the baby's sex. I don't know how accurate it is though..
