The written word can last forever, long after you and I are dead. It is not subject to lapses of memory or added details that were not intended. Ever play telephone in grade school? The first child was told "Erica likes the color green" and the last child in the line said "Erica likes to eat green buggers for lunch." Written communication captures and exact thought or notation and preserves it with time where as oral communication is subject to each teller elaborating and adding there spin on the story.

Without written communication, everything would be just word of mouth. The only history would be oral history. No newspapers, no Internet (thank you Al Gore!), no books or magazines.

Because written communication can be preserved and constantly referred to or accessed, whereas spoken communication is easily forgotten or misinterpreted.
