Although your son means no harm, he should release the praying mantis. It will die if kept in captivity. They are very important to our environment.

Maybe you could show him some web sites about praying mantis so that he can satisfy his curiosity, just type into yahoo search and you will find thousands of good site to show him.

There are different types of insects known as "walking sticks" or "stick bugs".
If what you have is a member of order Phasmatodea, they eat plant matter and they live on trees and shrubs, so it will need a container/terrarium with plant parts (branches and leaves).

Check Bug Guide, a great online source for insect identification.
Here are photographs of common "stick insects", try to find the one you have, and follow the links for more information:

And here's an entire website dedicated to walking sticks:

Keep it in a small fish tank with a lid. Use part of the tree or shrub/bush he found it on and put that in the tank for the creature to eat and live on and hide in.

Dont forget water for it to drink. Put some cotton wool in the lid of a jar and soak it with water. Place the lid in the the fish tank and it will find the water, itself.

Are you talking a preying mantis? If so they need live insects to capture and eat. Almost any environment will do since they get water from eating their prey so a water dish is not needed. just keep it closed tight enough to keep them inside.

i would give it grass and see how it does. get a little critter carrier, you can get them in pet stores. get some twigs, rocks, a cup of water, and grass and put it in it. you could ask someone at a pet store what they eat. but i think the best thing you can do is let the bug go and get your son a fish or something.

It is a walking stick (there's a scientific name, but you can find that at the web site)
"Usually all They require is blackberry leaves and water to thrive. However, They do prefer to have their leaves in their cages lightly misted."
This site is interesting! It also says a female walking stick can reproduce without mating!!
