Because many people don't understand what freedom of speech means. They seem to think that means people should be sheilded from any consequence of what they choose to say.
The Dixie Chicks choose to exercise their freedom of speech by saying some ugly things about the president, They have not been sent to jail. The government has not banned their music. People who were offended by their statements choose to express their opinions by not buying Dixie Chick music & telling radio stations they would change the channel if a Dixie Chick song came on.
Both groups were exercising their freedom of speech.

Because the right wing does not want people to speak freely about anything except the latest football scores or Desperate housewives. The minute we use our freedom of speech to speak out against injustices in our country, we become subject to warrantless "sneak and peek" searches, wiretapping, etc. Most of the warrants issued through FISA since the Patriot Act have been against peacful protest organizations. Look it up!

Because not everyone agrees where freedom of speech crosses over into invading someone's privacy or hurting other people.

Everyone has right to express himself/herself freely as long as this freedom of speech is directed to the policy or behaviour of a certain person rather than the person himself

Because if we have freedom of speech then we can say and do what we want (like speak out against the war, disagree with religious philosophies, and say how we don't like the president).
