The U.S. is often at a disadvantage in the global economy because we do have more strict laws than most other countries. (I have lived on 3 different continents and have seen the pollution first hand).

There is currently a strong campaign to get the whole world (including the citizens of the U.S.) to believe that United States is responsible for everything bad. Everyone loved the U.S. until the Soviet Union fell, and then we were the only country left on top to look at.

While we do put a lot of pollution into the world, more from it comes from developing industrial countries like China. However, a lot of the pollution that we put in comes from ordinary people driving to work and using electricity to power their computers and such. The way for government to start helping and taking responsibility is to create laws that set higher fuel efficiency standards for vehicles and other devices.
