Trees shipped properly and appeared healthy when planted. I don't know if cutting the bare branches is the thing to do. Or should I see what they do next spring?

I wouldn't cut any branches at this time. When the weather begins to warm up in the spring, watch for signs of new growth.

You might want to contact the nursery where you bought your trees and politely mention that while the lower branches appear to be doing well, the upper branches are bare. Ask if this is common in newly planted trees and what do they suggest in the way of pruning.

Some nurseries offer a guarantee on trees, so it may be to your advantage to mention your concerns now, just in case your trees aren't doing well in the spring.

When cutting hedges, start from the top down.

When cutting trees, start from the bottom up. ALWAYS.

It sounds like you planted them upside down. Try flipping them over and see how they do next year!
