What is the back story of Leo on Charmed?

I have started to watch it a few months ago off and on. I seen a show today where he was basically a handyman. Was he always a whitelighter? If not, how did he come to be one?

Leo was in the military and died in war. After he died he was given the chance to become a whitelighter. Which is a guardian angel for witches and future whitelighters. He poses as a handyman as a disguise until he gets to know his charges.

A whitelighter is what Merlin was to King Arthur, a guardian angel as well as someone who is able to advice witches as to the next course of action.
Leo went under the guise of a handyman to watch over the "Charmed Ones" aka the Halliwell sisters. As fate have it, he ends up falling for Piper & they both wed with 2 sons.

He started out undercover as the handyman and that is how he became involved with Piper. He was taken away when he did, but he was always a whitelighter. He died in WW2 as a medic and got blown up saving soldiers. He was the family white lighter after Sam left when Patty died.
