It's going into limp in. This is to protect your transmission from damage and so that you won't end up stranded. Take it to a transmission shop and have them run a diagnostic on it and test drive to verify conditions and problem. It can be a vehicle speed sensor or it can be a shift solenoid. Best not to take a chance. By the way cleaning the sensors that are located at each wheel will not help you. Those are sensors for the tone rings for your antilock brakes.

Have you ever serviced the transmission by changing the fluid and filter? This should be done about every 30,000 miles or two years. Is your fluid low on the dip stick? Stop by a transmission shop. They can test drive it and give you an idea of what's wrong with it. If they immediatly reccomend a new trans, leave and get an second opinion.

That sounds like a speed sensor problem. Clean all of the little speed sensor pickups on all wheels, if that doesn't fix it, run a diagnostic to find out which one is causing the problem. Good luck.
