your cars belt tensioner should tension the belt to the proper setting automatically

Does it have an auto-tensioner? Yes, sure, 1/2 inch of slack, but on a run of 12 inches between pulleys. Do you have a problem with your belt? You may have a bad bearing somewhere that is causing it to go bad. Need more info to help.

once tight about 1/2" - 1" is normal.depending on the length of the longest run...more than that will make it slip and wear out prematurely.Less than that will wear on the bearings of the alternator and any other devices it drives You check this by pushing on the belt with your finger on the longest run of the belt.

It should not be so tight that you can't move it, About 1/4 inch to3/8ths inch deflection up or down should be good
