Should be as long as you don't leave it on forever. Might want to shut it off after sometime.

It's ok to leave the laptop in standby mode for short periods of time but if its overnight or longer I would suggest powering down the laptop to save energy.

it should be ok because i do this all the time. but if i know that if i will not be using it for two or three hours, i usually turn it off first. if it is on standby mode for too long, the laptop will be a bit overheated. the components inside maight not last as long as those laptop that never been overheated.
BTW, it is not so difficult to turn it off and on again later.

It's reccomended that you put your computer on hibernate if you want to leave it for long periods of time but for shorter periods, standby is very effective, if you don't want to go through the whole process of shutting down. I personally use hibernate to save myself the trouble of re-opening everything especially between classes.

Not too long ago I saw 5 or 6 office machines working into the late hours, hackers were running the machines, you are better off not on the internet when you finish using it !

Of course it's Okay !
If not, then those manufacturers wouldn't create a stanby mode for laptops !
