a lot of people say the Derek Jeter will win it just cause his team made it to the playoffs. People should look at the player not the team.

If you want the real-life answer to this question, it's:

"The Red Sox would have finished 20 games out instead of 13 games out without Ortiz, so how valuable can he be?"

If you want the Bill James answer:

"Ortiz is clearly the most valuable player because he has a much higher Runs Created than other player in the AL. This race shouldn't even be disputed. Ortiz by a landslide. The guy is the latin Ted Williams."

I agree with you but the people who say Jeter will win have a point. We sometimes think,"MVP, oh yea, let's see...who's the best player, oh David Ortiz is leading AL in HRs and RBIs, oh he should definitely be MVP this year", but the fact is MVP means Most Valuable Player, it's not TBP, The Best Player. And the whole thing I'm leading to is that, how is Ortiz is the most valuable player when he couldn't carry his team to the playoffs?? What value does he have if the Red Sox aren't in the playoffs? While Jeter on the other hand, isn't as good as Ortiz if you compare them 2 by individual stats, but he led that Yankees offense by having his BA over .340 and stealing bases and giving his team opportunities to score. He basically kept that team together while Matsui and Sheffield were gone, while A-Rod had his tough times and while R. Johnson had his bad times too. If it weren't for Jeter, the Yankees would be in the Red Sox spot right now with all these great players but no use for it because they didn't make the playoffs. That's what value is all about. And now I would love for Ortiz to be MVP because he's on my Fantasy team and it's kewl to have the MVP on your team, but technically, you talk value to a team, Jeter is the best at doing just that, giving value to his team.

MPV stands for "most valuable player". David Ortiz belongs to a Red Sox team that has no chance of making the post season. He may hit fifty something homers and bat in 150 base runners, but his team will not accomplish anything as a result of his action. The truth is you can be the best player on a team and not accomplish anything. David Ortiz is just unfortunate that he is on the Red Sox and not the Yankees. To earn the MVP you must be a factor for a team that has a future in October.

One big reason that he should not win it is he just hits. He doesnt play defence. He is just a hitter. I think Santana should win Cy Young and MVP this year in the AL. Look at his numbers, he is a few days away from the pitching triple crown. MVP doesnt mean best offensive stats it represents how valueble that player was to that team. If its not Santana then i would probolly say Jeter but im not a Jeter fan....

I think it should be either Frank Thomas or Jermaine Dye. Those two players deserve to win and not David Ortiz.

Once again, check the record book. Facts don't lie unless, it involves George Bush. They have been plenty of MVP's whose teams didn't win the pennant. Don't argue do your research.

Ortiz should win it. A-Rod won it one year that the Rangers finished LAST!
