i hate paying the big bucks and want to know if i can do it on my own

You cannot hook up a DSL from cable tv...you can sign up for cable modem for your computer through your tv cable company.
DSL is a modem which connects to your telephone line.

DSL cable is only for the DSL modem and is only compatible for your computer. Different cable cables can be for TV (digital cable) as well as, Digital internet, with a cable modem

You find the main cable outlet comeing in to the house, Follow it out to a main box for several houses or apartments. Look for ones that are disconnected. Try Try Try to find the right one, Most are not marked with your address or apt #.
