True wisdom requires both an understanding of the inner self as well as the outer universe. To focus on one or the other will lead to a misconception of your place in reality. Humans and their nature are not the center of the Universe, and neither is the Universe more important than the center of one human being.
We are made of stardust. We are as ancient as the Universe. Let your outward nature reflect this.

I agree that both are very necessary for a quality life of understanding. It is very hard. Live your life trying to explain creation, purpose,etc. or living your life studying and understanding everything around you. I try to study both as much as possible.
