I have a daycare. I have to say that markers DO NOT stay on. Pumpkins have a waxy skin, and the markers unless permanent do not adhere.
I would suggest tempra being the best, but messy, followed by pens (Bic or same sort), in different colors, we've cut out pictures and glued them on (construction paper) done in black and yellow, or use stickers.

Well I think paint is better than markers because the pumpkins skin lets the marker come off easily.... and before ya know it it will be all over, just like paint.... but you could have them dress them up to look like their favorite characters bringing in old hats, scarves, dads old neck ties, fake eyelashes.....
Or stick things in them or to them, like sequins, foam pieces, construction paper, fuzzy balls, pipe cleaners (make great hair and sun glasses), glitter, pieces of Lead-free solder, the possibilities are endless...
and depending on the ages of the kids you can have them write a short story or paragraph about their pumpkin, its its a magic pumpkin what does it do..? If it is a super-pumkin who does he save... just ideas.. good luck!

permanent markers or tempera paint. Anything else will smear. Magic markers will smear the easiest. It has to be permanent. Why not get them all to wear an old shirt and use fabric paint? I did that once with my kids at the boys and girls club it was pretty cool looking

Permanent markers are great for that sort of decorating. I know my mother in law who is a teacher has used them and she teaches kindergarten. The Sharpie ones are best and you can normally find them at one of those cost centers in bulk. Happy decorating! Beads and feathers and glue and buttons and all kinds of crafting materials also make a great way to decorate.
