the bad guy than the safety of any hostages?

Trust the government they are always there to help.!!!Always get the bad guy, who cares about the collateral damage.

From what I've heard on the news, the guy with the gun stopped negotiating with the cops. If that happens then they're really not given much choice. They can sit there and wait it out and HOPE the guy just decides to give up. Or they can try something, anything to try and get everyone out safely.

I think at the end of the day, if you were the hostage of some gun wielding nut job and he's not even trying to negotiate his way out of the situation, then you know how things are going to go down. Unfortunately this time that poor young girl died, but no one is to blame but the nutter that pulled the trigger.

Just my opinion...

It sounds like law enforcement felt they were out of options and they had learned he was sexually abusing the girls. I don't think he even made any demands.

I believe for the FBI the number one priority is freeing the hostages. Perhaps I'm naive, but an innocent person dying doesn't get you good press - I'm sure there will be lots of questions about what happened here.

seems to me they go hand in hand:
You get the bad guy and amazinly you find the hostages are safer!
