But a single food chain never exists and organisms need to operate at more then one tropic level. which results in the interconnected food chain that is called food web.

A food web starts branching off. a food web could be that sharks eat seals, but they also eat tuna. it could branch out from seals and tuna, because they eat too. sometimes 2 branches will meet at a common thing, like if 2 kinds of foxes were in the same chain and both ate rabbits or a kind of bird (sry if that's gross to anyone) and were at the same 'height' in the food chain.
