Swans, like most flying birds, use thermals to give them lift. They glide too, to save energy.

They adapt to their environment as cygnets learning from their mothers on whatever swan lake or estuary they grow up on. Then they pratice swan skills, like scooping crustaceans from mud, and f*uck up like we all do, and try & try again until they get good enough to live independently.
