Read some about John Locke who was an English philosopher at the great awakening. The ideas fostered during that time lead to the idea of self determination and equality. It lead to the downfall of the system of Monarchy and the idea of representative self government. It gave birth to the idea of Democracy.

Coincidentally it also led to the French Revolution and the rise of Communism.
