Good luck. I have never heard of an herb, or vitamin truly working. I have been battling deoression for several years, and even certain meds don't do the trick!

It depends on how severe the depression is. St. John's Wort helps some for mild depression. I wouldn't do Kava Kava, to many health risks with the liver. Valerian will calm you but not really for depression. My advice for depression would be 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine. 5-HTP will boost your seratonin levels and L-Tyrosine boosts nor-epinephrine (sort of a natural Prozac). You can find these in places like Vitamin World.

I took St. Johns Wort for a few years, treated like a prescription med and took the recommended dose and did it every day. It does work for depression, but takes some time to start working. In the short term, it works on anxiety on an as-needed basis.

Unfortunately, even the natural herbs don't do it for me. It could be psychosematic (sic?), but even the meds I get from the pharm don't do it.
I honestly think that somehow we're supposed to be able to control our fears/anxieties/panics, etc. with our brains.
If i ever figure out how, I will let everyone know. But til then, deep breaths and hiding in the closet work for me.

I have had to resort to prescription medication for a biochemical imbalance in my brain that causes the same symptoms. Natural supplements are helpful for my overall well-being but don't cut it for treating those tough conditions that in my case are on-going.
