Women ovulate around 14 days after they start their period.

Women typically have a period about every 28 days. They ovulate anytime from day 10 through day 16, counting the first day they start their period as day 1. Having said that, some women may ovulate 2x in one cycle, or a little earlier than day 10, or a little later than day 16. Also remember that sperm can live in the woman's fallopian tubes up to 3 days...waiting for that egg to pop out of the ovary and start traveling to the uterus via the fallopian tube. So....if you do not want a baby, use protection throughout the month. You know the old joke "what do they call a woman who uses the rhythm method of birth control? Mommy"!

On average its half way through her cycle, so on a 28 day cycle, she should ovulate on cycle day 14. The fertile period is usually a 5 day time frame due to the life of sperm. So if you had sex 5 days before she ovulated you still have a chance of getting pregnant. I beleive the egg is only viable 24 hours or so after ovulation so if not sperm is present, no pregnancy.

14 days BEFORE your period begins. if you have irregualar cycles, you might want to invest in a monitor if you are trying to concieve. They really work wonderfully. It will tell you several days before you ovulate, so you can "do what you need to do". sperm can last in the female body for 3-5 days, but a womans egg only survives about 24 hours, so it is a good idea to have the sperm "waiting" when you ovulate.
