If I was going on a weekend vacation or something and i was going to miss a show or two, would I be able to set a DVD recorder to record my show on the DVD or are they "be there to start recording" device? Help, i really don't want to have to pay for a subscribtion to something like TiVo and I want my shows on portable media.

DVD recorders are just like VCR. You can program them to start & stop recording, choose your channel and it's done. Just make sure you have formatted the DVD first, and make sure the quality is such that you will be able to record enough time. When you come back from vavcation, all you will have to do is finalize the disk.

Every DVD recorder I know of can be set up to record just like a VCR. Read your instruction manual to find out how.

It all depends on what type of dvd player. If you still have the instructions read them and see if you can or go to where ever you bought the dvd player and ask them
