Being gay does not mean that a person could not be a good soldier. But who would want to serve next to him. Soldiers spend a lot of time together, there is a lot of emotional bonding as well as a lot of showering and sleeping together. Would you want to shower or sleep or share intimate thoughts with a gay boy? Think of the morale issues involved here. The military's job is to hunt down our enemies, kill them and break their stuff. period. It should not be used as some sort of social experiment at the risk of weakening our national defense.

According to Gregory Herek a social psychologist with a Ph.D. from the University of California at Davis who has conducted more than 15 years of empirical research on topics related to sexual orientation, "The research data show that there is nothing about lesbians and gay men that makes them inherently unfit for military service, and there is nothing about heterosexuals that makes them inherently unable to work and live with gay people in close quarters."
He goes on to say "that heterosexuals are fully capable of establishing close interpersonal relationships with gay people and that as many as one-third of the adult heterosexual population in the U.S. has already done so."
That being said the evidence says one thing so why is Congress saying another? This is because there is a long standing tradition of homophobia and promotion of heterosexual ideals. The thought that a "girly" man can do anything that a "tough" guy can do breaks at the core of what the top military wants people to think of the military.
Women have it even tougher as to be a woman means to "girly." Therefore when a woman preforms as a task that a man can do she is therefore called a lesbian, since lesbians are seen as being "butch."

Nope. There are so many rednecks in the military, that if they knew a guy was gay, they'd kick his ***.
