Most states have reciprocity laws with other states. Check your local state laws regarding reciprocity and also Tenn. Usually if it is unloaded and packed away - separate from the ammo, you can transport it across state lines _IF_ it is legal in the state you are coming from and going to.

NRen2k5 - you're the git. (whatever that is)

Gun registration is totally unnecessary and would serve no purpose. There is no legitimate reason The State needs to know who has guns and how many. Besides the people you need to worry about, criminals, wouldn't register their guns anyway because they're not supposed to own one in the first place. Do you really think anybody would register an illegal gun?

Your driver’s license analogy is also pretty bad. You do not need a license to drive a car on your own property.

And as far as registration and confiscation go, Australia about 10 years ago would like to have a word with you. The government’s gun registry was the primary list used for seizing millions of guns.

If traveling by car, Federal law provides "safe passage" if the following conditions are met:
1. You are legally allowed to have the gun at you point of origin and destination.
2. The gun is unloaded and not accessible without leaving the passenger compartment.
Some states may have less restrictions.

Thanks for not answering the question TexMan, you useless git.

Registration is NOT "the first step towards confiscation". This is an idiotic, transparent "slippery slope" talking point from the NRA. It's as stupid as saying that requiring people to get a drivers license is the first step towards forcing everybody to use public transport.

Needless to say, I have reported you.

As to the original question, you would be best to contact your state police and the police of the states you plan to travel through, and/or the offices of the governors of those states. Laws have a way of changing every so often, so you're best to get the actual word of the law from those who know it best.

Car Travel:

Traveling to Tennesse: A valid handgun permit or license issued in another state shall be valid in this state according to its terms if the person carries a handgun only and the person is in possession of the permit at all times while carrying the handgun. You should also know that Florida and Tennesse are in a "reciprocal" agreement that is signed between the regulators of two states allowing the residents of each state, who have obtained a permit or license to carry weapons, to enter the other state using their license or permit from their home state as the authorization to carry weapons in the other state.

Airline Travel:

You can travel with you gun provided it is registered, disclosed, and in checked luggage only. Ammunition - Check with your airline or travel agent to see if ammunition is permitted in checked baggage on the airline you are flying.
If ammunition is permitted, it must be declared to the airline at check-in. Small arms ammunitions for personal use must be securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.

Check with your airline or travel agent to see if firearms are permitted in checked baggage on the airline you are
flying. Ask about limitations or fees, if any, that apply. Firearms carried as checked baggage MUST be unloaded,
packed in a locked hard-sided gun case, and declared to the airline at check-in. Only you, the passenger, may have
the key or combination.

You must abide by ALL state, local and federal laws of the states, cities, municipalities, counties and jurisdictions that you travel through.

A rule of thumb, is UNLOADED, Gunlocked, and in the trunk of your car, with all paperwork attacked to it. If you are pulled over, inform the officer of your situation, so that he is not "surprised" when he finds it on his own, which he will then "surprise" you by throwing your face on his hood, just so you can enjoy your 2nd amendment rights.

Errr...how will you be traveling? Not by plane I hope.
Call Tenn and FL Highway Patrol. Transporting firearms is legal but there are certain rules to follow.

There is a federal law that says, you may have a gun along (for protection) when traveling across states.
