This really depend on your location in the US, cost will vary from the low $30's per sqaure foot to excess of $400.

Check with mutiple contractors in the area that you decide to build.

City permit fee's will also vary. Check with the local building department.

In Las Vegas it is about $285/sf if you can find a builder thats not booked up for the next three years. In northern Indiana it is about $63/sf

If you decide to build, consider 'modular homes' (not to be confused with manufactured (mobile) homes.
They are cheaper, stronger and take a lot less time to build.
