Check the links below. Maybe some mineral spirits with a light touch of steel wool can help. As always, follow label directions and use mineral spirits carefully.

Trust me on this one.......... I went the cheap way out and decided to strip, sand, 2 coats of primer and 4 coats of paint on my cabinets. It took literally a week. It was so much physical work, time spend waiting for the coats of paint to dry and my kitchen was in a uproar. After I was done, ( its been 3 years now) the paint still chipped off where your fingernails hit the cabinet. I would NEVER, NEVER suggest to anyone that they do it. Spend the extra money and get NEW cabinets. I am so, so sorry that I ever did that. Now, I won't get new ones cause of all the fricken time and work I spent on them already. It snot worth is, believe me.

don't go off the deep end. you've probably love the cabinets cause that the way homes get bought so. warm water spice span lite ly. wait a day and go over them meticulously and check wipe them down for any greasy stuff by stove and things like that . when they are day and clean get a couple off cans of poly clear coat. in the auto motives section of any box store. shake well get plenty of lights on when you do it. learn the technique of what it take to lay on a wet coat and how to see it in the sun light. practice a Little and it would put two wet coat on one hour between coats to make adjustment of the first one looks before you proceed after the other dried.lay out old sheets that will catch the over spray. lock your doors so you got a fair chance to complete the thing before the world says you can't do that. see if other people know your doing this it takes on a life of its own so either know this or look the door and i recommend locking the door cause the i told you so are helpful people if you can still get the to clear coats on it and let it go. it should shine but you can't take chemicals to it that will break done some products Krylon is this recommendation for this for the happiest way out for the cabinets

you have to sand them down first, whether you paint or stain. Start w/ a nice heavy grit then go finer till you smooth them out. Only then will your paint/stain adhere to the wood. If you paint then I would definately suggest a good primer, otherwise you could be painting coat after coat and still look like crap. Good luck.

You can paint with just a good primer. To get back to the wood, you would need to strip them.

Get a good wood stripper, srip them, sand them, and then re-stain them. It's a lot of work but worth it.
