I assume that you are talking about a land line phone. If that is the case, local and long distance is seperate. You can buy both from the same company, or you can buy the services from two different companies. Keep in mind that if you opt for local service only, you will not be able to make long distance calls. Even at that, land line long distance plans can be very very cheap. Many charge only 3 to 5 cents per minute anytime with no minimum. I have such a plan. If I make no long distance calls during a billing period, there are no long distance charges whatsoever on by bill.

All local plans have the option of long distance carriers. You must choose one, You wont get billed for it unless you use it. I use Yahoo Messenger phone service and I love it.

Verizon home service does I have just local service and that is it...just ask for it thaty might pressure to get or lie to you but you can get local service by itself.
