Measurement by ruler or by water displacement .. and why?

i used a graduated cylindar and got resluts versus using a ruler and dimensional measurements , i know the water displacement is more accurate but why is that the method of choise , what makes it more accurate?

Water will be displaced (or not) by all small irregularities that can not be measured with a ruler, since the ruler measures a distance and can not account for dips or rises, no matter how small, displacement will.

The water displacement method is a little more complicated, but is more likely to be accurate. ruler completely accurate
