try complimenting something of theirs. ex. if it's a girl, tell her that you like her earrings ro something. eventually it'll lead to somewhere.

Just open up & start talking. Be nice, crack a joke or 2, try to establish a free flowing conversation, and allow the other person to chime in every now & then with their thoughts.

Why don't you talk about somthing relivent to the day? the homework you just did? how about your fave place to go for lunch? talk about something that you could build a base for a friendship. Simple but affective. Compliments go long ways too.

When they sit down at the beginning of class just ask them how their day is going, then quickly introduce yourself. Then you should be able to talk to them more often just normally.

Just ask their name. Simple enough. You might feel a little shy to do this, but who cares. Cant go wrong with asking for a name.
