My wild theory is that it was the first step (or testing the waters) of(/for) a later-abandoned plan to expand the USSR's domination to Iran and the region (remember, that revolution in Iran has taken place just a few months before the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan).

The Soviet Union wanted to take over the world one country at a time. They thought Afghanistan would be an easy target and a gateway to spread communism throughout the middle east.

Afganistan doesn't have much, but what it does have is strategic location. Not too many exploitable natural resources, but you can run oil pipelines through it, establish military bases to enforce your whim on the region, things of that nature.

Russia needed a southern (ice free) port to run a oil pipeline to, simple as that. didn't work out.
