classic horror was cerebral. modern horror relies too much on special effects and trying to push the envelope.

the style of the horror. alot of classic horror films deal with the generic monster like the werewolf, vampire, or zombie. no, i'm not dragging any of these classics in the mud. the new ones seem to loose sense of what a true horror movie is.
the new horror films deal with modern technology. they bring the classic monsters from yesterday and then soup them up. sometimes adding to the myth to make it better. sometimes taking away from it.
right now, monster movies are starving for new ideas. they are having to go back to remakes. when they do that, alot of the filmmakers just screw everything up.

classic horror used the element of surprise more instead all that blood-gore that modern horror uses. The classic had better stories then modern.

I think that classic horror didn't depend on the blood and guts that modern horror does. It was more of a jump out of the screen at you than jump out of your skin.

modern horror is all blood, gore, splash and splatter. classic horror is monsters and vampires and such with a minimum of guts and gore.
