1984 by George Orwell, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier. All are AMAZING books and aren't any of that Nicholas Sparks, Nora Roberts crap that you see filling up the shelves these days. Those kinds of books are like the fast food of novels. If you want something substantial, I highly recommend them!!

Bones of the Moon by Jonathan Carroll sounds like it might be right up your alley! It's suspenseful with a chick lit sort of twist.

OK, then, read some Alice Hoffman books. Practical Magic is very good and has little to do with the movie. I haven't read one yet that I didn't like.
My sister suggests Murder at the Ford (Margaret Truman)

Try Seven Deadly Wonders by Matthew Reilly. It just came out and it was awesome. Or anything else by Matthew Reilly or Jack duBrul or Clive Cussler or Ted Bell, etc.
