How can you tell that they are not just trying to sell you their product under the guise that you are not adequated protected. And if you have spyware and virus protection through you ISP, and firewall with Windows, is that really sufficient? If not how much do you need?

I use an antivirus system that the Government of China uses an I never had one virus in my system in over nine years.

Being a clinical psychiatrist I have a moral and legal obligation to keep my pc 100% clean from all virus/spyware/malware.

I tested every free and purchase antivirus system known. An I found only one that actually works 100%. Never had a virus or spyware in my system in nine years.

Go to, www.filseclab.com and download thier Twister AntiTrojan Virus program. (You will have to pay a small one time fee). You will never have to pay an annual fee for updates, support or new versions. The one time fee is for life. ($29.99)

The software company is located in Beijing, China. They have excellent support, frequent large signature updates an as always all new versions are free. No annual fee for anything.

Comes with a real time scanner that really works. Actually I am quite amazed over the nine years how well it works.

Scans memory on startup.
Real time scanning in the background.
Open any webpage with an embedded trojan/spyware or malware and scanner will clean on the spot. An It is really removed from your system.

Download any kind of program from zips, all compressed files, software files, music, etc, etc, an if there is a hidden embedded trojan, spyware, malware, this program will stop the download and clean. An will advise you to end the download.

Will even find a virus in the installer wizard, like "Wise Installer". And will stop the installation while it is being installed and clean. Plus this program always will trace back who installed the trojan.

I had a trojan in and wizard installer. Twister caught the trojan and stopped the installation. I wrote the origianl company and told them the wizard installer had an embedded trojan to steal your data. The company now uses thier own installer.

You can't beat this software for a one time purchase fee only. Actually I don't know of any antivirus progam that even comes close to this state of the art technology.

All I can say it is worth the one time fee. Your pc cost alot of money and you don't want it destroyed. Plus your privacy is protected at all times.

There is nothing in it for me to praise this program. I tell it like it is. If it is garbage then I will say so.

You can never have too much protection.

I work for a certain anti-virus company as a debugger and beta-tester, and I get the new systems 6 months before anyone even knows about them, I also have spywares, pop-up blockers, firewalls, dynamic IP address, masks, you name it, and I still get hit.

At the end of the day, whats £25 a year for a AV system from the shops, that's just over £2 a month, or you could get, (in my opinion, less reliable), free ones, but would you want to take the risk on not having an AV then getting hit.

An example would be w32.sasser, a malicious code created in Germany I believe a few years back by a teenager, Sasser then proceeded to mess up over 3 million computers, whether they had AV's or not.

Also, if you use P2P like WinMX or LimeWire, or whatever, you're practically asking to be virused, so in this case, won't do much good.

The best way to go is if you have nothing important on your system, and don't do online banking or anything, to make a GHOST of your HD at a known safe point, (I recommend Norton Save & Restore for this, though there are plenty to choose from, and you can even do limited back-up's with programs like Nero), then, if your PC does get messed up, you just roll it back to the safe point).

If you know you've got a particular virus, you can check the Symantec database for a tool and/or advice on how to remove it, which is free, but again, what's worth more, a £25 AV system from the shops, or a £500 computer?

In short; the moment you think you're safe on the internet, is the moment you open yourself up.

You can't know about the free scanners, but you can feel better about more reputable companies, such as McAfee, Panda, and Symantec. The ones that don't make you download a bunch of crap are usually safer.

No matter what your ISP is doing, I would still run an antivirus program if I were you. They may not be able to scan inside archives or scan embedded files. You are much safer using an antivirus program. Try AVG - it is free for personal use and very, very good. Plus, I would doubt your ISP uses a free AV program so that gives you an added layer of protection by using two different AV programs.

This site test and rates AV and AS programs. It has be sued several over its evaluations and never lost. This site doesn't sell you anything and, therefore, has nothing to gain. I trust its evaluations completely, as does the pro's in the Computer Security Industry. Anytime you are considering an AS program check this site to see if it's listed.

You don't know!!! Don't download and don't open e-mails from people you don't recognize. I have never had a virus or spyware program and never have had problems either because I don't download junk from unknown sources and don't open e-mail from people I don't recognize. If someone sends me an e-card I chuck it. Mean, NO, Safe, Yes.

If you are speaking of paid versions..yes they will lie to you and say your computer is infected to get you to buy their product. Stick with free versions. They work just the same with a couple of things disabled but not a big deal.

the best way for you to know is to scan your computer first and if you notice something is wrong after you scan then thats it because you never really know unless you are a computer genius or something
