Conservatives generally believe less government involvement is a good thing. Being a "fiscal conservative" means you believe in the government cutting taxes and spending less money. Conservatives mostly support individuals rights. Thus they tend to be against the federal government passing laws or policies which infringe on the rights of people or give the federal government more power over the people. A "government of the people, for the people and by the people" is the ultimate conservative ideal. Liberals on the other hand support government involvement in taking care of each and every citizen. They usually support laws which give power to the Federal government and generally oppose individual freedoms. liberalism is best described as a form of socialism. Countries such as Cuba and Iran have governments which are considered to be liberal. While the US and Brittan have more conservative governments. Liberals also typically are anti-business ...whereas conservatives strongly support entreprenuerism. Liberals generally think the governments main job is to provide social programs ... conservatives think the Fed's main focus should be in providing a strong national dehfense. Conservatives have faith in the people. Liberals place their faith in a big government. G.W. Bush is considered by most to be a moderate. Which means he is conservative on some issues and liberal on others. He is best described as a "middle of the road" sort of guy.

Conservatives are a part of the Republican party like liberals are part of the Democrats.

Conservatives believe:

1. Small government
2. Literal intrepretation of the Constitution. For example, the First Amendment states the government shall not establish a national religion nor prohibit the free exercise thereof. This means that there will never be one national American religion. This means that if a Christian wants to pray in school they have the right to.
3. Lower taxes
4. Strong national defense
5. pro-life. Abortion is wrong. Some may find an exception with rape, incest, etc. But having an abortion because you do not want the pregnancy is wrong.
6. Trickle-down economics. This means that if you allow business owners to have more money, they will reinvest it into businesses and we will have economic growth.

Liberals believe in: note my comments in ( )

1. Big government. Government is the cure to problems.(which only makes them worse).
2. The Constituton is a breathing document. Liberal judges interpret the Constitution (and try to make new laws). This process violates the job of the legislature.
3. Higher taxes to redistribute wealth
4. Pandering to the UN and the rest of the world. Liberals have been on the wrong side of everything in the war on terror.
5. Pro abortion. Liberals believe that women can do what they want.
6. Not sure what the opposite of trickle down economics is. Liberals believe in entitlements to health care, pensions, and other programs that cripple us economically. The tax system in this country is a disaster and forces companies to leave for a cheaper place to work.

President Bush is not a conservative. He is too big government.

President Bush, like most Republicans, is a conservative.

In general, conservatives believe that the less the government messes with our personal lives, the better. We feel that our federal government ought to handle national and international defense, trade, treaties, and things like that. We think they should do it in the most efficient manner possible, leaving most other concerns to the local governments or individuals. For instance, conservatives believe that we are best able to make decisions about how to educate our children and how to spend our money.

Liberals believe that government should control a great many more things in life. They believe THEY know better than I do how to raise/educate my child. They believe THEY ought to be the ones to decide how I'm spending my money, where I should go for healthcare, and how to plan for my retirement.

I, obviously, am a conservative.

Bush is a Conservative. Liberals believe in helping the less fortunate, and that government should provide public services. Here, in Canada, the government pays for health care--something Conservaties don't like. Conservatives believe in less taxes, and that people should pay for social services out of their pocket. For example, if you're poor and can't afford health care of education, you get neither, no matter how difficult your situation is. This is just a simple explanation.

Liberal and Conservative are very poor indicators of political views, I think the best site is Political compass.org which looks at your economic ideals and Social ideals.

"There's abundant evidence for the need of it. The old one-dimensional categories of 'right' and 'left', established for the seating arrangement of the French National Assembly of 1789, are overly simplistic for today's complex political landscape. For example, who are the 'conservatives' in today's Russia? Are they the unreconstructed Stalinists, or the reformers who have adopted the right-wing views of conservatives like Margaret Thatcher ?

On the standard left-right scale, how do you distinguish leftists like Stalin and Gandhi? It's not sufficient to say that Stalin was simply more left than Gandhi. There are fundamental political differences between them that the old categories on their own can't explain. Similarly, we generally describe social reactionaries as 'right-wingers', yet that leaves left-wing reactionaries like Robert Mugabe and Pol Pot off the hook."
