I got new job waiting tables, and this afternoon, my job called and talked to my roomate, asking if I would skip class to work. Also, we are supposed to be oncall sometimes to work. I will not skip class for work. I told them my availavility when they hired me. Am I being difficult, or are they being unreasonable?

I totally agree with you your education is more important, and asking you to cut class is way out of line.

Not at all, if they hired you knowing when you can and cannot work, they agreed to it. They cannot ask you to skip class to work.

(Keep in mind though, most states are At Will states, so they can fire you when they want, and (generally, there are some exceptions) why they want.

Stick to your guns, talk to your manager, explain that it's not appropriate to 1) speak to your roommate regarding your work schedule and 2) expect you to skip class or work when you told them you are not available.

They are probably ok with it, but just took a shot in the dark.

Ask them how they'd like it if school called you up and asked you to skip work for class or some project or something? Hmmm. Doubt they'd go for that.

They are being unreasonable. You gave them your schedule and they should have informed you if it was not possible, or if it was not going to work for them. You are not being difficult, but reasonable and firm, which is a good thing.
