A friend of mine received a check made out to her from a credit union. She took it in to her bank, and they held it for two weeks. When the check cleared the bank and released the funds to my friend. Later the bank called her and said that they wanted the money back. The credit union that sent the check tried to put a stop payment, "AFTER" the check cleared. What would you do???

As far as I know, you can't stop payment on a check when payment has already been made. It's been paid; there's nothing to stop. The credit union would have to contact your friend and ask for the money back. Your friend should ask the credit union why they want the money back and what this is all about.

Legally, she's off the hook. Ethically, I'd have to know why the credit union put a stop payment on the check, and why the bank held it for two weeks.

I would return the money. Then again I am not in this situation and don't know what I would do. Sounds crazy, don't it.

I would keep the money and tell them they had it too long anyway.
