You don't want anything smaller than 14 (the bigger the number, the smaller it is. i.e. 14 is smaller than 12, etc...0 is huge). It actually heals better and more comfortable at larger gauges. The "cheescutter" reference is the perfect example of why.

They don't make your breath stink unless you have poor oral hygiene to begin with.

If you're considering the smallest size in relation to how much it will hurt having it pierced, forget what you think. A hole through your tongue will hurt the same if it's tiny or a bit larger...there's no difference in the pain or sensation of an 18 gauge needle going through it than there is of a 14 or 12. It hurts...a little, but you get over it, and it's quick. The swelling and tenderness afterward is more to deal with than the actual piercing. Just take good care of it, listen to your piercer's advice and *NOT* your friends'...they're not professionals.

You can get straight barbells in as small as 18g, but they're really not recommended. Because your tongue moves around so much because of eating and talking, it puts a lot of pressure on the jewelry, which can create the "cheesecutter" effect, which can result in the jewelry basically splitting your tongue. Because of this, I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than a 14g, and neither will any respectable piercer

you need to purchase barbells that are 18 or 20 gauge, yet they are meant for ear piercing, eyebrow piercing, and so on ... and oftentimes they are actually not long sufficient to extra healthful by your tongue conveniently. Your tongue heals up very right this moment after eliminating the jewelry, which you will desire to wind up having to pierce it back.

when my son was little there was a girl at the office that I worked at with her tongue pierced, and she just loved messing with the damn thing constantly
so one time my son asked me "what happened to her tongue"
so I told my son "she got caught being a liar"
"they took her out back and nailed her tongue to the picnic table and left her there all night"
