Anchorage is about like any other city in terms of job opportunities, housing, medical care, etc.
Some jobs are further north "on the slope" and are usually 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, or some variation of that. It would be hard to care for a son with a slope job.
Check the Anchorage Daily News want ads, and Workplace Alaska for jobs.

I never have, but, did have a friend worked there. It cold, cold, cold. He had this pair of gloves with the fuzzy part of Velcro on the back to blow his nose. Said, he blow his nose and it Freeze in no time and then he just brush the ice off. I not see why a person could not bring their children. But, I would really study about this and have proper clothing. I wish I knew more. Hopefully there be some can help you. Just know, it cold! Ha!
