The best example of this atttude is a quote from Archie Bunker (from All in the Family - a 1970s TV show).
"I'm not a bigot! I'll be the first one to admit: It ain't YOUR fault you're black!"
Archie seemed to think if he wasn't in the KKK, he wasn't a bigot. It's all about perspective.
But sometimes the "I'm not a racist, but..." line can show the degree of political correctness in society today. If I am in a room full of people & I want to point out my friend on the other side of the room to another friend. If he is the ONLY black man in the room, the best & most logical way to identify which guy I am refering to would be to say "Joe is the black guy over there." But the would, for some strange reason, be viewed as racist.

Many people do believe they are not racist, but they dont understand something about a culture. Or, they may not understand that their thoughts are the thoughts of a racist.
The best thing to do is educate them in their ignorance and explain to them that, though they claim they are not racist, the comments they make are very racist and hurtful. Then further educate them so they can begin to understand, and step away from racist ideas.

Well I create many race based questions. And I do not start them with I"M NOT RACIST. I create the questions to promote stereotype awareness, dialogue between the races to stamp out hate, and honestly to see the types of reponse from peolple. Pretending racism isn't real and ignoring it. does not make it go away. If enough people call me racist for creating my questions I will inform them I'm not and will explain my reasoning for creating those questions.

You make a very good point. Many racist people really don't see themselves are being racist. It's because they don't honestly "hate" another race, even though they buy into the stereo types. I have several family members that are that way. It's amazing isn't it.

They really think they aren't racist when in actuality we know the truth. A lot of times it's ignorance.

You can always count on people who are racist to say "I'm not racist" or "I have black(white) friends".
